Later, as a teenager with hip and back pain, I ended up at the chiropractor. His diagnosis was that I was very loose jointed, and prone to injury a structural level. “She needs Pilates,” as the chiropractor told my mom. So off I went to class.
Well, Pilates ROCKED MY WORLD, transforming my love of movement into a passionate affair. Who knew that movement wasn’t just a fun, expressive thing that could take you places, like up and down mountains and across the dance floor...but that movement could HEAL you as well? Such is the beauty of our bodies!
Movement became my healer, and I’m wildly blessed that my tweaky joints brought this experience into my life at a young age. Suddenly the human body--my body--was FASCINATING, and there was so much more to it than I had ever been aware of. I became empowered by moving within MY alignment, and by going deep into my core.
Over the years, Pilates taught me how to push myself physically, because I learned to move from my CENTER. And I learned how to monitor what kind of pains meant that I was growing, and what kinds of pains meant that I was tweaking myself out. (And I'm STILL learning!) That confidence and awareness has continued to grow, and as a result I’ve had the pleasure of participating in all kinds of adventures in yoga, dance, mixed martial arts, rock climbing, and intense backpacking. Oh how glorious the views are from the top of those mountains!
Fast forward to the season at hand: IT’S THE HOLIDAYS!
You already know that staying centered in the middle of a whirlwind is sometimes difficult, but doing so can also AMPLIFY the lively energy of the times and spread cheer throughout your whole being. So within the beauty and chaos of this season, here are some fun ideas to create many Magical Movement Moments for yourself...
1. Use your BREATH! Wherever you are, do 5 minutes of deeply dizzying BELLY breaths. Let your gut expand and contract like a slinky. Relish the spaciousness within you.
2. Take a movement CLASS! Go with friends or alone. Going deep into the body-mind realm along with others creates a sense of self while also creating heart-felt community.
3. Listen to MUSIC!! Put on a favorite album or playlist and turn that volume UP! Dance and sing along with abandon, suspend all self-criticism.
4. Get OUTSIDE! Go connect with some plants and the expanse of the sky. Move along that trail as fluidly as you can, and melt into the beauty of which you are a part.
May you and your loved ones enjoy this season for all its hilarity and challenges, and take some time to connect to your center on the DAILY, finding within your body and soul a source of never ending MAGIC.
